Your Core Power System
Masks — Upgrades & Where to Find Parts
The mask is the spine of your entire progression. Every upgrade, ability, and tribesman recruitment slot runs through it. Understanding what feeds it — and where to find the parts — is the difference between stagnating and snowballing.
⚙ How Mask Upgrading Works
Two separate resources drive the system — energy and upgrade currency — and they are found in different ways
🔋 Sunstones — Mask Fuel
Sunstones power your mask's active abilities during combat. When the energy bar runs out, all mask abilities go offline entirely. Always keep a stock of Sunstones on you before entering ruins, boss arenas, or major combat. Running out mid-fight is one of the most avoidable deaths in the game.
- Found in Ancient Ruin chests alongside green crystals
- Dropped from bosses and found in Barbarian Fortress chests
- The mask slowly recharges from sunlight — Solar Conversion Efficiency upgrades speed this up
- In Shifting Sands: also found in pyramid chests and points of interest across the desert
💎 Green Crystals — Upgrade Currency
Green Crystals are spent in the Mask Node Repair screen (press Y) to unlock and upgrade nodes in the mask tree. They are the main bottleneck of mask progression — limited in the wilderness but farmable from specific locations.
- Ancient Ruin chests — the most accessible early source; chests respawn relatively quickly
- Barbarian Fortress chests — higher yield, guarded by stronger enemies
- Ancient Ruin Dungeons — instanced areas with reliable crystal loot
- Holy Ruins Dungeons — the best farming spots, especially Snow Mountain Holy Ruins for bulk runs (80–100+ crystals per run with a strong build)
- Temple Guardians — always drop Green Crystals; target these specifically when farming
- Desert Ruins (Shifting Sands) — lower yield but more predictable and safer than Holy Ruins for mid-game farming
⭐ Awareness Strength — Your Overall Level
Awareness Strength gates which mask nodes and tech tree upgrades you can access
Awareness Strength is Soulmask's core progression level. It unlocks upgrades across Talents, Masteries, Technologies, Knowledge, and mask abilities. Crucially, every activity in the game contributes to it — you are never wasting time from a progression standpoint.
Combat
Killing enemies earns Awareness Strength EXP directly. Tribesmen kills also contribute to your total — deploy well-geared followers in respawn zones for a reliable passive farming loop.
Gathering & Crafting
Chopping trees, mining stone, and crafting at workbenches all push the Awareness meter. Crafting works while you move, so you can level while doing other tasks simultaneously.
Exploration & Building
Base building, tribe recruitment, and exploring new areas all grant Awareness EXP. Spreading your play across all systems is more efficient than grinding a single activity.
🌳 The Mask Node Tree — Three Modules
Press Y to open the Mask Node Repair screen. All masks share two universal trees plus a mask-specific Interface Module
| Module | What it Does | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Core Functional Module | Universal to all masks. Contains Deter (recruitment), Control (possess tribesmen), Energy Unit (more mask energy), Perception Enhancement (Life Perception range), Connection Enhancement (tribesman cap) | Repair first |
| Auxiliary Functional Module | Universal to all masks. Grants Awareness EXP bonuses for different proficiencies. Choose nodes matching the skills you use most (combat, crafting, gathering) | Second priority |
| Mask Interface Module | Unique to each mask. Unlocks the mask's distinctive passive bonuses, active abilities, and Mimicry mode. The difference between masks lives here | Third priority |
🎭 Base Game Masks — Cloud Mist Forest
Three starting masks and several more found through exploration and boss encounters
| Mask | Playstyle | Key Abilities | How to Get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Civilization | Tank / Survivor | Stamina Surge (max stamina + carry load), Critical Barrier (head damage -10%), emergency healing | Starting choice at character creation |
| Conquest | Stealth / Melee | Noise Absorption, Light Disturbance (concealment +10%), Hidden Assault (backstab damage +10%), 1.5% lifesteal in Mimicry, fall damage reduction | Starting choice, or pull from a level 25+ Ancient Ruin |
| Rich | Archer / Hunter | Arrow precision boost, weak point detection, Hunting Guide (+5% Awareness EXP from beast kills), Deeply Focused (stamina cost -5% for crafting), bow damage +15% in Mimicry (Sniping Mode) | Starting choice, or pull from a level 25+ Ancient Ruin |
| Tactical Guidance | Tribe Commander | Massively improved tribesman combat AI, NPC battle sense upgrades, Carrier EXP speed +30% for tribesmen. Node 5 makes tribesmen punish enemy mistakes actively | Level 50+ Holy Ruin — endgame farming |
| Explorer / Torch of Eternity | Survivalist | Resistance to negative effects, reduced hunger/thirst drain (from level 2), environmental hazard protection | High-level Ancient or Holy Ruins |
| Golden Legend | Scout / Recruiter | Reveals all tribesman talents, exact proficiency numbers, and hidden proficiency caps from a safe distance — invaluable for evaluating recruits before engaging | Found via exploration or crafted at Mysterious Stone Table |
🏜 Shifting Sands Masks — Egyptian God Tier
Four new masks added by the DLC, each gated behind a boss or built into the intro sequence
| Mask | Theme | Key Ability | How to Get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horus | Mobility / Aerial | Flight and aerial traversal. The first major "wow moment" in the DLC — changes how you navigate the entire map. Fastest exploration tool available | Given by default at the start of Shifting Sands — found in inventory during the intro sequence |
| Anubis | Undead Army / Survivability | Status Reflection (any status effect reflecting back on attacker in Mimicry), Undead Army (killed marked enemies rise to fight for you), Healing Boost (+50% bandage duration) | Defeat the Anubis Hound boss. Travel to Sunken City region → use the Mysterious Portal → head North to the Ancient Pyramid |
| Sobek | Water / Apex Predator | Best choice for water environments, enhanced dodging, arrow evasion, close-range predator combat | Defeat Sobek the Crocodile at the Barren Sandland pyramid — also the gate boss for unlocking airship tech |
| Amun-Ra | Solar / Damage | Solar-powered damage and support abilities. Scales strongly with time of day and sunlight exposure | Ancient Pyramid in Shifting Sands — exploration required |
⛏ Crystal Farming — Route by Progression Stage
What to target at each stage of the game for steady mask upgrade material
| Stage | Best Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Early game | Ancient Ruin chests near your base | Build close to one. Chests respawn regularly. Guarded by dogs (easy) or tribesmen. Scout camp crates give no crystals — skip them |
| Mid game | Barbarian Fortresses + Ancient Ruin Dungeons | Higher loot density than surface ruins. Temple Guardians always drop Green Crystals — target them specifically in every dungeon run |
| Mid-late game | Desert Ruins (Shifting Sands) | Lower yield than Holy Ruins but highly predictable and consistent. Good comfort farm when you're not ready for Snow Mountain |
| Late game | Snow Mountain Holy Ruins | Best bulk crystal source — 80–100+ crystals per run with an optimised build. Requires strong DPS. Boss-exclusive materials for deepest mask upgrades only drop here and from specific bosses |
| Shifting Sands | Pyramid chests + Patroller III dungeons + enemy airship camps | Mix desert ruins into your routine to smooth out supply gaps. Enemy airship scout camps have guarded chests with bonus crystals — blow the red barrels nearby to access them |

All Masks — Abilities, Locations & Strategy
Every mask in the game across both maps. Each one fundamentally changes your playstyle — not just a stat buff but a different way of moving through the world. Carry Sunstones before any serious encounter. When mask energy runs out, all abilities go offline entirely.
⚙ Core Mask Mechanics
Everything that applies to every mask regardless of type
- Mimicry Mode is the mask's active skill tree — unlocked by defeating Fogfrog. Each mask has a unique Mimicry that changes combat or movement completely. Activate it with the Mimicry key
- Mask Energy (Sunstones) powers all abilities. Zero energy = all abilities offline. Always carry Sunstones before ruins, boss arenas, and any heavy combat
- Switching masks is done by pressing F to transfer your Awareness Level to the new mask. You keep your level and node investment carries over for that mask's own tree
- Activating a new mask requires bringing it to the Mysterious Stone Table inside a Rift Valley dungeon and pressing Space Bar
- Swapping on the fly is unlocked mid-game — carry a stocked backup mask into heavy combat zones so you can switch between combat and utility as needed
- Three node modules per mask: Core Functional (universal — Deter, Control, Energy, Connection), Auxiliary Functional (universal — EXP bonuses), and Interface Module (unique per mask — this is where the personality lives)
- First node for every mask: Common Overclock — costs 2 Green Crystals and boosts upgrade speed by 50%. Unlock immediately

🏜 Shifting Sands Masks — Egyptian God Tier
Four masks themed around Egyptian deities. Horus is free. The other three are gated behind pyramid boss kills. All four consume Energy to function — when energy runs out, abilities go offline entirely.
| Mask | Full Name | Mimicry Ability | Passive Bonuses | How to Get | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 🦅 Horus | Celestial Wings | Flight — soar through the air with full offensive and defensive positioning. Jump to ascend, Crouch to descend at the helm or in Mimicry | Combat and survival stat buffs, aerial scouting advantage, vertical combat positioning | Automatic — found in your inventory as you fall from the sky at the start of the Shifting Sands intro. No fight required | Exploration, scouting, early-game desert navigation. Equip immediately |
| 🐊 Sobek | Abyss Overlord | Apex predator mode — massive oxygen pool extension, enhanced speed, critical hit boost +20%, improved self-healing. Designed for underwater and shoreline combat | Dramatically extended underwater breathing, faster swim speed, arrow damage reduction, 20% crit bonus, stronger passive self-healing | Defeat Sobek the giant crocodile at the Ancient Pyramid near the Barren Sandland Mysterious Portal (Three River Junction). Skin the carcass for pyramid keys, then enter and claim the mask. Also unlocks Airship Technique node | Water/coastal combat, dungeon diving, players who want damage forgiveness while learning new encounters. Worst mask for tribesmen due to aquatic-focus bonuses not applying on land |
| 🐺 Anubis | Doomsday Judgment | Status Reflection — any status effect hitting you in Mimicry is reflected back onto the attacker. Undead Army — killed marked enemies rise as undead soldiers fighting for you. Healing Boost — bandage duration +50% | High survivability, status immunity via reflection, undead force multiplication, bandage efficiency | Defeat the Anubis Hound boss near the Sunken City Mysterious Portal, then travel North to the Ancient Pyramid. Defeat the boss outside, use the key to enter the inner chamber and claim the mask | Solo survivability, clearing dense camps, boss add phases. Best all-rounder of the four SS masks. Worst for tribesmen as it moves aggressively and needs careful aggro management |
| ☀ Amun-Ra | Glorious Hymn | Solar Engine — Mimicry Mode turns you into a walking solar furnace that pumps continuous heat damage to all nearby enemies. Scales with daytime sunlight exposure — peak damage at midday | Solar-powered offensive aura, group damage support, scales with time-of-day. Weak at night or in underground areas | Defeat the Onyx Scarab boss at the Ancient Pyramid near the Rock Lake Mysterious Portal (northern map). Enter the pyramid after defeating the boss to claim it | Group DPS, exposing enemy weak points for allies, daytime aggression runs. Best used in open-air encounters during daylight hours. Weak in caves and at night |
🎯 Which Mask When — Situation Guide
Carry multiple masks and swap on the fly once mid-game unlocks the ability
| Situation | Best Mask | Why |
|---|---|---|

| Desert exploration / navigation | Horus (Celestial Wings) | Flight removes the distance problem entirely on both maps. Equip before any long cross-map journey |
| Boss fight (any tier) | Anubis or Conquest | Anubis status reflection punishes high-damage bosses; Conquest lifesteal sustains through long fights |
| Dungeon runs for crystals | Civilization or Conquest | Civilization's stamina surge handles sustained room-clearing; Conquest stealth skips dangerous packs |
| Tribal base raids / invasions | Tactical Guidance | Your tribesmen fight intelligently without constant direction — lets you focus on the raid leader |
| Dense enemy camps with adds | Anubis | Undead Army converts killed enemies into allied reinforcements — turns numbers against the enemy |
| Daytime open-world combat | Amun-Ra | Continuous AoE heat damage during sunlit hours — best for clearing respawn zones efficiently |
| Recruiting / tribe building session | Golden Legend + Civilization swap | Scout with Golden Legend, switch to Civilization for deterring fights where you take hits |
| Underwater ruins / coastal dungeon | Sobek | Extended oxygen and swim speed make water-based content far less punishing |
| Archery / hunting session | Rich | Bow damage +15% in Mimicry, weak point detection, +5% Awareness EXP from beast kills |
| Long expedition into hostile biome | Torch of Eternity | Reduced hunger/thirst drain and status resistance keeps you moving longer without supply returns |
