Shifting Sands DLC Only

Ships & Airships

Ships are the defining mechanic of Shifting Sands — starting as river transport and evolving into flying mobile bases. They are locked to this map and follow the same tribe ownership rules as everything else.

Ships belong to the tribe Leader. Like buildings, chests, and tribesmen, all ship ownership transfers to the tribe the moment you build or claim one inside a tribe. If you leave, the ship stays. Ships and all ship-related gear are also locked to Shifting Sands — they cannot be taken to Cloud Mist Forest via the Stargate.

Ships evolve through three distinct phases unlocked via the tech tree and boss encounters

Thatch Boat — First Water Travel

Unlock the Basic Ship node in the Knowledge & Technology tab. Crafted from thatch and thick rope, it handles small rivers and channels only. Alternatively, claim a free pre-built Tribe Boat from River Delta or coastal camps — these already move on both water and sand and save early resources. You can claim up to 3 Tribe Boats per player on most servers.

Small Wooden Boat — First Real Vessel

Research Shipbuilding Technique to unlock the Small Wooden hull. Build at a workbench or shipyard. Add a rudder, sails, and helm, then snap on Wooden Deck Flooring. Keep the build light — overloaded boats handle poorly in currents. At this stage you can place a Bonfire on deck to create a mobile respawn point (the wood is immune to the bonfire's heat) and begin using it as a mobile base before you have flight.

First Flight — Beat Sobek the Crocodile

To unlock the Airship Technique node you must first defeat the Sobek Crocodile boss at the pyramid in the Barren Sandland region. Bring Bronze-tier gear and armed tribesmen — expect casualties. After the kill, skin the carcass to get keys to the pyramid interior. Loot the chest inside for premade airship parts and Power Crystals. You need Awareness Strength 30 to unlock the node, but you can use looted parts immediately even below that threshold.

Making a Boat Fly — Anti-Gravity Components

Install these parts on any Small Wooden hull to achieve flight: Marine Sand Skids (bottom), Small Wings (sides), and a Small Airship Engine. Fuel the engine with Power Crystals. At the helm, use Jump/Crouch to ascend and descend. If pyramid chests stop dropping parts on repeat Sobek runs, farm Patroller III dungeons and enemy airship scout camps in the desert instead.

Falcon-Class — Medium Airship

Reach Iron Age and Tribe Level 3, then unlock Premium Shipbuilding Technique. The Falcon is significantly faster in the air than the wooden boat, though slower on water. Requires Gravity Cores (from exploration) and a Medium Energy Core. Crew capacity increases substantially — now viable as a full mobile production platform with tribesmen assigned to onboard crafting stations.

Shark & Ray-Class — Late Game

Steel Age unlocks the Shark (heavy carrier) and the Ray (giant solar battleship with a main cannon). Both have massive energy and material demands. Save these for when your base economy is fully automated and your resource pipelines are stable. The Ray in particular is designed as an endgame siege platform.

Ship as Mobile Base

Once on a Falcon or Shark hull, your ship becomes a self-sufficient floating civilisation. Place crafting stations, bonfires, beds, and storage directly on deck. Use the Work Type dropdown on each station to assign tribesmen roles. Enable crafting table autoplay with maintained stock levels via the cog icon to keep production running without constant attention. Tribesmen can gather nearby while landed and craft passively while flying.

💡 Hull class determines how much you can build on deck and how many crew you can assign. Crew capacity on a Falcon or Shark is substantially higher than the starter wooden hull.

The Bonfire-Home Trap

If you place a Bonfire on your ship and bring tribesmen there before establishing your land base, the ship becomes their registered "home". They will always return to it when it's nearby — including non-crew workers who should be at land stations. There is currently no way to reset this except removing the tribesman from the tribe entirely.

  • Establish your land Bonfire and bring tribesmen there first
  • Only add a ship Bonfire after your workers are homed to land
  • If tribesmen are already ship-homed, dock away from base when not using the ship

Power Crystals & Fuel

Anti-gravity engines run on Power Crystals — don't set off on long flights without a full stock. Farm crystals from pyramid chests (first Sobek kill), Patroller III dungeons, and looting enemy airship scout camps. Enemy camps often have explosive red barrels nearby — blow them to reveal guarded chests with bonus crystals.

Soulmask 1.0 supports saving and sharing ship blueprints. Official preset layouts (like Rising Sun Pavilion or House Boat) show efficient module placement. The Steam Workshop integration in Shifting Sands lets you subscribe to community blueprints that appear directly in your in-game blueprint menu — instant placement if you have the materials.

Anti-Gravity Engines — Where to Find Each One

The anti-gravity engine is what turns a boat into an airship. Each hull class needs a specific engine tier. Getting the wrong tier — or not knowing where to find the next one — is the most common reason players stall in Shifting Sands mid-game.

Power Crystal fuel time: 6 Small Power Crystals give roughly 10–12 real-time hours of flight on a basic setup. Always carry spares — running out of fuel mid-flight drops your ship and can destroy it on landing. Farm scout camp chests (blow the red barrels nearby) when supply runs low.

Primary Source — Sobek Pyramid Chest

Defeat Sobek the Crocodile at the Barren Sandland pyramid. Skin the carcass to get the pyramid keys, then enter the pyramid and loot the chest inside. This should drop a Small Anti-Gravity Engine, Marine Sand Skids, Small Wings, and a starter stack of Power Crystals. Note: the chest sometimes appears bugged and empty on first visit — relog or progress the tutorial quest slightly if it is not there. A patch fixed this for most players.

Fallback — Enemy Airship Scout Camps

Parked enemy airships in the desert have two guarded chests nearby. Locate the explosive red barrels next to the ship, blow them up (shoot or hit quickly to overload the shield), then loot the two chests inside. These reliably contain Small Power Crystals and often engine components or replacement wings. Small airship camp: sand bandits guarding, plus a dangerous giant ballista. Use ranged attacks on the ballista crew first.

Fallback — Patroller III Dungeons

If the Sobek pyramid chest stops dropping parts on repeat runs, clear Patroller III dungeons instead. These are harder combat encounters in the desert that reliably drop small engine parts, replacement wings, and additional Power Crystals. Run the same dungeon multiple times — parts can appear on the second or third clear even if the first was empty.

Installation — How to Make It Fly

On your Small Wooden hull, install in this order: Marine Sand Skids on the bottom of the hull → Small Wings one on each side → Small Anti-Gravity Engine in the engine slot at the rear or bottom → load 6 Small Power Crystals into the engine fuel slot. Mount the helm. Use Jump to ascend, Crouch to descend. The ship must be on water or flat ground to take off — it cannot lift from a steep slope.

Mineral Oil gate: Some engine variants and higher-tier anti-gravity systems require Mineral Oil to craft. You cannot craft Mineral Oil until Steel Age (Awareness 54 via a Distiller). Before that point, find it as a secondary drop from mining Coal Ore nodes in Shifting Sands and Plateau regions, or from chests in the Holy Ruins south-west of the Sulfur Pool portal. Do not let this block you — the Sobek pyramid drops a usable engine that skips the Mineral Oil requirement entirely for the first flight.

⚡ Medium Anti-Gravity Engine — Falcon Class

The Falcon is significantly faster in the air than the wooden boat — but slower on water. Worth the upgrade for aerial exploration

Prerequisites

  • Reach Iron Age
  • Hit Tribe Level 3
  • Unlock Premium Shipbuilding Technique in the tech tree (Knowledge & Technology tab)
  • Have Gravity Cores (exploration drops from pyramid ruins and dungeon chests)
  • Have a Medium Energy Core — small cores do not provide enough power for the Falcon

Where to Find the Medium Engine

  • Holy Ruins at coordinates approximately -2276, -2634 (upper-left region of the map) — chest loot. Enemies here hit significantly harder than Sobek-era zones
  • Ancient Ruins Dungeon at approximately -1192, -1842 — same region. Another chest source
  • Ruins Dungeon in the Scorching Desert — reported source near the first iron node area. Check the interactive map at saraserenity.net for the exact location
  • Craftable once Premium Shipbuilding Technique is researched — requires the Medium Energy Core as a key component alongside Mysterious Alloy
💡 Retractable Gangway: Unlocked at Iron Age, this is a unique Falcon feature — an infinite stairway you can deploy from the air to reach the ground without landing the entire ship. Essential quality-of-life upgrade for mid-air base operations.

🚀 Large Anti-Gravity Engine — Shark & Ray Class

Endgame engines for the heaviest hulls. Not found in the world — these are crafted via Advanced Shipbuilding

Prerequisites

  • Reach Steel Age
  • Unlock Advanced Shipbuilding in the tech tree
  • Have a working Shipyard — Shark and Ray hulls are built at shipyards, not workbenches
  • Substantial stockpile of Steel Ingots, Mysterious Alloy, and ancient mysterious cores
  • Consistent Mineral Oil supply — craft via Distiller at Awareness Level 54 or farm from Coal Ore nodes

Engine Tiers & Output

  • Large Anti-Gravity Engine — base tier: 5,000 energy output
  • Large Anti-Gravity Engine T3 Power: 5,000 output, +60% max energy output
  • Large Anti-Gravity Engine T4 Power: 5,000 output, +80% max energy output
  • Higher tiers require rarer mysterious cores sourced from endgame dungeon loot
  • The Shark supports heavy modules: cannons, ballistas, energy shields, large storage

Design & Community Content

Blueprints & Steam Workshop

Soulmask 1.0 introduced a fully integrated blueprint system for ships, bases, and structures — along with Steam Workshop support for sharing and downloading designs. Here is how all of it works.

📐 The Blueprint System — Saving & Using Designs

Blueprints let you save, share, and instantly place structures and ships if you have the materials

Accessing the Blueprint Menu

Press ESC in-game. In the bottom-right area of the escape menu, look for the "Ship Blueprints" button (or "Building Blueprints" for base designs). This is the central library for all your saved designs and any Workshop content you have subscribed to.

Saving Your Own Blueprint

Build your structure or ship, then select it and use the blueprint save option to record the current layout. Give it a descriptive name. Saved blueprints store the exact placement of every module, wall, floor, and component so you can rebuild the same design without re-planning from scratch.

Placing a Blueprint

Select a saved blueprint from the menu. The ghost outline of the full structure appears for placement. If you have all the required materials in your inventory or tribe storage, placing the blueprint builds it immediately. If you are missing components, the blueprint shows you exactly what is needed and what is missing before you commit.

Uploading to Steam Workshop

From the blueprint menu, select a saved design and choose Upload to Workshop. The blueprint is published to your Steam Workshop page. Other players can subscribe and the design appears in their in-game blueprint menu automatically. Workshop blueprints require the publisher's build limits and server settings to match for full placement — check the blueprint description for any notes from the creator.

Subscribing to Workshop Blueprints

On the Steam Workshop page for Soulmask (filter by category "Ships" or "Buildings"), subscribe to any blueprint you want. Launch the game. Open ESC → Ship Blueprints → Workshop tab. The subscribed design appears here and can be placed immediately if you have the required materials. You do not need to restart the game after subscribing — the blueprint is available within the current session.

Official preset layouts: Soulmask ships several designer-made layouts including Rising Sun Pavilion and House Boat. These appear in the blueprint menu under Official Presets and show ideal module placement for efficiency — useful as a reference even if you want to customise rather than use them directly.

🔗 Linking Ships Together

You can attach multiple ships to form a flying fortress — everything travels together when you fly

  • Attach smaller scout ships or cargo vessels to your main hull using ship linking points. The linked fleet travels as a single unit when the main ship flies
  • This lets you specialise ships by function — a main Shark as the production platform, scout Wooden Boats for reconnaissance, a cargo ship for resource hauling
  • When combat escalates beyond a scout's capability, fall back to the main ship's heavier weapon loadout — the fleet's tactical depth comes from this specialisation
  • All linked ships share the flight state — if the main ship is fuelled and flying, linked ships come along. If the engine dies, the whole fleet grounds
  • Careful with weight — adding linked ships increases the total energy draw on your main engine. Over-loading a Small or Falcon engine causes the ship to fly sluggishly or not at all

🛠 Mods — Steam Workshop Modkit

Beyond blueprints, Soulmask has full mod support via the MODKIT tool

Installing Mods (Client)

  • Browse the Steam Workshop at steamcommunity.com/app/2646460/workshop and subscribe to any mod
  • After subscribing, open Soulmask and click the "Mods" button on the left side of the main menu
  • A list of subscribed mods appears. Click Apply next to each one you want active
  • Restart the game if prompted. The mod is now active in your session

Running Mods on a Server

  • Server mods must be configured in the startup command line using the mod ID: use(-mod="ModID1,ModID2")
  • Players connecting to a modded server must have the same mod(s) installed on their client — a mismatch denies access and prompts them to subscribe to the correct mod
  • Mod IDs are the numeric identifiers generated automatically by Steam after a mod is uploaded
  • Major game updates can break mods — check the Workshop page after each patch for compatibility notes from the mod author
Blueprint server settings: Some complex community ship blueprints require building restrictions to be fully unlocked on the server before they can be placed. If a Workshop blueprint fails to place or is missing components, check the blueprint description for server setting requirements. The creator often lists required settings or the build limit multiplier needed.

🎨 Item Quality System

Every crafted item has a quality tier — this applies to all gear, tools, and ship components

Quality is assigned at the moment of crafting — there is no way to upgrade a White item to Green after the fact. If you need a specific quality (for example a Purple Axe for a tribesman), craft the item multiple times and keep the best roll. A tribesman with 120+ crafting proficiency cap produces higher-quality items than your main character, making your best crafter the go-to for important gear.

Travelling Between Worlds

Crossing to the Other Map — Fresh Character

Whether you are a Cloud Mist Forest veteran heading to Shifting Sands for the first time, or starting fresh on the desert and wanting to visit the jungle, the experience and the rules are very different depending on your play mode. Here is exactly what to expect.

🗺 The Two Systems — Multiplayer vs Single-Player

Cross-map works completely differently between modes — the most common source of confusion

Multiplayer (Server Cluster)

  • Two servers run simultaneously as a cluster — one on each map
  • You physically walk through the large sea Stargate portal on the bottom-left corner of the Cloud Mist Forest map to transfer
  • You cross as a tribesman character, not your initial chieftain — possess a tribesman and walk them through the portal
  • On arrival: your character, tribesmen, mounts, masks, and regular items carry over
  • What does NOT transfer: ships and ship gear (Shifting Sands only), Phase Anchors (Shifting Sands only), and Mysterious Marks (Cloud Mist Forest only)
  • The destination map starts completely dark — local scout progression is still required to reveal it, regardless of your level
  • The cluster port is a separate internal port from the normal game port — the server admin must configure this before cross-map travel works
  • All players on the Shifting Sands server must own the DLC

Single-Player / Private Friends Server

  • Seamless transfer is not available — you must create a new world save
  • When creating the new world, you can specify a save file to copy your character data from — this carries over your Awareness Level, masks, and tech tree unlocks
  • What does NOT copy: inventory items, tribesmen, base structures, or mounts — you arrive with skills and knowledge but no gear or base
  • This is actually better than it sounds — with high Awareness Level you can craft and fight effectively from day one despite starting with nothing
  • To copy your character back to the original save later, use the CopyRoles.exe command-line tool included with the game
  • Starting fresh on each map is the recommended approach for solo players wanting the full intended experience of each map's intro sequence

What to prepare, what to expect, and what carries over

What to Bring (Multiplayer Cluster)

  • Fill your inventory with Bronze and Iron tools, weapons, and armour — Shifting Sands crafting starts at the same tier as Cloud Mist Forest, so good gear from day one dramatically reduces early friction
  • Bring a stock of Sunstones — mask energy depletes during the Horus mask's flight intro; running out mid-flight early on kills you
  • Bring Antidote, Healing Tisane, Bandages — desert enemies can apply status effects your current medicine doesn't cover if you haven't farmed Shifting Sands alchemy yet
  • Stock of your best food set — your buff rotation still works even though the recipes are different on this map
  • Mounts carry over on cluster — bring an Alpaca or your best pack mount for early resource runs
  • Leave your ships behind — they are Shifting Sands-locked and cannot be brought from CMF

What to Expect on Arrival

  • The map is completely dark — you must interrogate local scouts to reveal each region, same as your first day in Cloud Mist Forest
  • You will have the Horus Mask in your inventory — equip it immediately if you do not already have it. Flight makes the blank map far less daunting
  • Enemy levels and aggressiveness feel harder initially because the desert biome is more aggressive than the jungle and you are in unfamiliar territory without familiar camp locations
  • Claim a free Tribe Boat from a River Delta or coastal camp as soon as possible — it gives you mobile carry capacity and a safe retreat before you can build
  • Your first priority is finding copper and tin and re-establishing your crafting base — the Shifting Sands progression loop is identical at Bronze Age, just with desert resources
  • Head to Sobek's pyramid (Barren Sandland region) relatively early — defeating it unlocks your airship tech which defines the Shifting Sands experience
For solo players using save inheritance: you arrive with no inventory, no base, and no tribesmen but with full Awareness Level, all tech unlocks, and all mask abilities. Treat it as a speed-run of the early game — with level 50+ Awareness you can fight, gather, and craft at a pace that makes the "fresh start" feel like a power fantasy rather than a grind.

Coming from the desert to the jungle for the first time

What to Prepare

  • Anti-poison gear or antidotes — the jungle is far more poison-heavy than the desert. Many Fogfrog-area enemies inflict poison with no warning
  • Pack tropical fruit or high-satiety food — some of the Cloud Mist Forest cooking recipes use different ingredients than you are used to on Shifting Sands
  • Leave your ships and airships behind — they do not work on Cloud Mist Forest and cannot be transferred
  • Bring strong gear — the jungle's Volcanic region is level 40–50 territory and the Snow Mountain zone hits 60–65

What to Expect

  • No flight — the Horus Mask's flight ability does not exist in Cloud Mist Forest and the Horus Mask has limited utility here. You will feel the loss of aerial mobility strongly, especially for navigation
  • The map has five distinct biomes compared to Shifting Sands' single desert expanse — jungle, desert highlands, mangrove swamp, volcano, and snow mountain all play very differently
  • Tribesmen recruitment follows the same rules but targets different tribes — Claw for combat, Flint for crafting, Fang for mixed roles
  • The Saber-toothed Predator → Fogfrog → Vajra Ape → Tempest Griffin → Mammoth boss chain is a strict gear-check ladder. Fogfrog unlocks Mimicry which you may already have — but the unique boss materials here are still required for Cloud Mist Forest endgame armour sets
  • Ancient Ruin Dungeons are level 10–50 — run them from the start for Green Crystals, gear, and boss unlock materials unavailable in Shifting Sands
  • Snow Mountain is brutal at level 60–65 enemy difficulty and extreme cold — save it for last even if you feel over-levelled from Shifting Sands experience
💡 Best reason to cross back to Cloud Mist Forest: Worship Containers, unique boss armour sets, Snow Mountain Holy Ruins bulk crystal farming (80–100+ per run), the Tactical Guidance and Golden Legend masks, and Meteorite Ore via the Snow Mountain craters if you haven't unlocked the desert craters in Shifting Sands yet.

Server Administration

Admin & GM Console Commands

Soulmask has a full GM console with 251 commands covering spawning, player management, world control, and debug tools. Here is how to activate it and the most useful commands for running a server or private world.

🔑 How to Become Admin — Setup

Two different setups depending on whether you are on a dedicated server or a private solo/friends session

Admin commands do not work in plain single-player. Soulmask handles admin commands as a server-side feature — a plain solo session with no backing server simply will not register them, even if you type the syntax perfectly. To use them in what feels like single-player, you must add a launch flag to your Steam launch options (see below).

Dedicated / Rented Server

  • Edit the server configuration file to add your Steam ID or in-game name to the admin list
  • Restart the server for changes to take effect
  • Press ~ (tilde) in-game to open the console and use gm commands

Solo / Private Friends Session

  • Right-click Soulmask in Steam → Properties → Launch Options
  • Add -Console as a launch argument
  • Launch the game. Open the console with ~ and use gm commands
Command prefix: Most commands require the gm prefix (e.g. gm AddExp 1000). Many commands also have a Chinese Pinyin alias alongside an English name — both work. The console auto-fills as you type so you rarely need to know the exact full name. 💡 Finding item class names: The full searchable item database at xgamingserver.com/tools/soulmask/items and soulmaskdatabase.com both list blueprint class names for every item. Search the item name, find the ClassName field, and copy the part after the last forward-slash for use in spawn commands.

🖥 The GM Panel — Click-Based Admin UI

Five built-in abilities accessible via the panel without typing commands

When you open the admin panel (after authenticating with gm key PASSWORD), a GUI appears on the right side of your screen with clickable actions. You can close the panel and retain admin privileges — re-open it any time by pressing ~ and typing the gm key command again.

Spawn Items

Browse and spawn any item into your inventory through a searchable GUI — no need to know class names manually. Faster than typing AddDaoJuByClass for most uses.

Spawn NPCs

Browse and spawn any NPC directly in front of you via a GUI interface. Spawned tribesmen can be recruited normally with ZhaoMu or via the standard deter process.

Free Camera

Detach the camera from your character for aerial map overview and cinematic screenshots. Your character remains in place while you fly the camera around freely.

Fly Mode

Enables flight for your character independent of the Horus Mask or GhostMode. Useful for quickly surveying a build or reaching inaccessible areas without clipping through geometry.

💀

Kill All (Nearby)

Instantly kills all nearby hostile NPCs and creatures within range. Use to clear a zone for building or resolve a raid that has gone badly wrong on a private server.

Always back up before destructive commands. Run gm BaoCun (Save) before any command that destroys structures, clears NPCs, or deletes tribes. The game saves to world.db — keep a rolling backup of this file on dedicated servers. There is no undo for demolish, ClearAllNpc, or DeleteGuild commands.
